striking projection mapping which produced just the wow factor we required

What the client wanted

It’s the biggest jamboree celebrating the achievements of the audiovisual industry, and the AV Awards wanted to celebrate its 20th anniversary with something special. What better than a delicious cake? But not just any cake. Befitting the innovative and hi-tech nature of the industry, and the hundreds of talented and creative guests in attendance, this had to be a unique cake. How about a gigantic six-and-a-half-foot cake, with extraordinary sugary sculptures and incredible moving animations?

Our concept

Motion Mapping had huge success with a large projection mapped cake at the National Wedding Show in 2017, which has already been viewed online over 90 million times. So, we were ideally placed to answer the AV Awards brief. Working again with Angie Scott Cakes, who made the cake, and developed the sugar craft, including a 26-inch tall edible version of Gizmo, the AV Awards mascot. Meanwhile, we created a storyboard of animations, ensuring the mapping for the cake matched the AV Awards assets and fonts.

The result

Genuine WOW factor! The cake itself, which was sponsored by Epson, was awesome, and our mapping worked a treat. We were only given a 2D image of Gizmo, but we used 3D modelling and animation so he could wander around the layers of the cake surrounded by moving steampunk imagery. The animations looked stunning, and the audience appreciated the incredible effect. We already work with a lot of AV companies, so to show off such a brilliant piece of work at their big awards night was something special. And they got to eat it afterwards.

What the client says

“The team was keen to feature technologically and artistically ambitious creations with impact at the AV Awards, especially as this year marked 20 years of the event. Motion Mapping and Angie Scott Cakes came up with the perfect solution – stunning sugar craft and striking projection mapping which produced just the wow factor we required and attracted a lot of interest from our guests.”
