When Rennie, the UK’s favourite indigestion solution, reached out to us for help making their spooky Halloween TV ad a reality, we were all in. We grabbed our software, equipment, gauze, and some coffee for the 2am London shoot, and got to work.
Sure, Halloween is scary, but have you ever had heartburn or indigestion after a greasy late-night feast? Now that’s the real nightmare. Luckily, we’ve got Rennie, the UK’s favourite heartburn solution, to kick those food ghosts to the curb.
The team at Rennie reached out to us to help them create the perfect Halloween TV ad, reminding people that there’s always a fix for their fried chicken-fuelled belly ache. They wanted to create ghostly visages of fast food for their ad without CGI, and came to us to see what we could do.
To produce the desired frightening food spectres, we turned to gauze. By mapping and projecting onto a special type of gauze material, we can create floating visuals with a holographic appearance to them – this is thanks to the projection partly going through the material and partly reflecting off it. The result is a semi-translucent image, which many describe as ‘ghostly’. Perfect for an ad about foods that haunt you, right?
We mapped and set up the equipment and gauze, then assisted the filmmakers with their advert production at 2am in London. Actors were filmed reacting to the floating fast foods to create an ad promoting the power of Rennie’s tablets, all without the use and extreme expense of CGI.
The WOW moment? Real-life food ghosts, floating in the streets of London after dark, helping produce an impressive ad for Rennie and their products. Gauze is an incredible tool in mapping and projection, elevating projects such as these and other live performances with immersive, floating visuals. It’s a powerful technique offering unique results that set projects apart.
