When Octopus Energy wanted to celebrate their campaigns in a way as bold as their brand, we took creativity to new heights, literally. From Yorkshire Day to the Euros, we lit up the night sky with stunning displays that stopped passersby in their tracks and made waves online.
When green energy supplier Octopus Energy reached out to us for an exciting first project, we knew it had the potential to turn into a lasting partnership. We’ve helped with several of their campaigns over the years, each with a challenging spin (and when we say spin, we mean that literally!) and each finding new ways to surprise and delight.
The brief centred on one key idea: to project onto Octopus Energy’s towering wind turbines, and has evolved through our creative partnership to reflect multiple different campaigns.
Let’s talk about two of our favourites. For Yorkshire Day, we were asked to project a celebratory message onto a huge 73m wind turbine, complete with the county’s white rose on the blades. For the Euros, they wanted the England flag in pride of place up the full length of the turbine.
Octopus Energy wanted to produce campaigns with stop-and-stare power: to post on their socials, for the public to enjoy, and for those seeing the show to share.
Mapping a giant wind turbine is no small feat, but it’s all in a day’s work for our team of specialists.
Octopus didn’t want us to map the rotating blades, but to instead map the entire space those blades cover. This meant that the projections would appear when the blades moved through them. We also mapped the tower of the turbine to use for brand animations, ensuring everyone knew exactly who was responsible for this visual spectacle.
We loaded up our equipment into a van and set up our systems and powerful projectors in the great outdoors. In true Octopus fashion, the entire setup was powered sustainably – we plugged directly into the wind turbine itself, turning renewable energy into bold creativity.
For each project, the landscape transformed as night fell. The wind turbines glowed against the dark sky, and the true brilliance of the projected visuals could be enjoyed near and far.
Each campaign with Octopus Energy so far has captured the WOW moment perfectly. Those who saw these stunning projected visuals delighted in the spectacle and shared them on their social media accounts, making the activation into a celebration of clean energy that travelled many miles across the country. The press came too, drawn in by the sheer scale and uniqueness of the projects, resulting in coverage both online and in print.
A WOW moment that garners attention is a successful one, and these Octopus Energy campaigns have certainly brought them positive attention.
