We projected an enchanting Christmas film onto an iconic hotel, drawing crowds, boosting footfall, and bringing festive magic to the heart of Leeds. A true showstopper for both locals and visitors!

BRIEF

LeedsBID wanted to create a magical experience that would draw families and visitors into the heart of Leeds for a festive event to remember. Their goals were simple; boost footfall, and promote the city centre as a vibrant destination for all.

We teamed up with Pro Audio Systems and creative studio Onionlab, who were brought on board as part of the project team, to deliver a spectacular immersive projection. It was showcased on the front of Queens Hotel, a beautiful landmark in City Square – and one of the city’s most iconic spots.

Their 2023 projection had wowed thousands of people, but as part of the BID’s mission to improve Leeds City Centre, they aimed to create an even bigger buzz for their 2024 event.

Challenge accepted.

EXECUTION

The magic of Christmas was brought to life with an enchanting animated film written by local screenwriter Lisa Holdsworth, and we made it unmissable by projecting it onto the front of the Queens Hotel.

Located in the heart of the city, it was the perfect place to capture attention, as well as the perfect home for the Christmas market in front of it.

Narrated by actor Richard Armitage, the film featured the return of a cheeky gingerbread man character who had featured in the previous year’s projection. There were plenty of opportunities for locals and tourists alike to watch, with multiple showings per evening in the run-up to Christmas.

To keep excitement building, we projected a countdown before every showing. This created a buzz amongst those in the area and kept people gathering close by in anticipation.

WOW MOMENT

The immersive projection was a hit, loved by families and drawing huge crowds to the square each night.

Locals, visitors and passers by stopped to watch the show, helping LeedsBID achieve one of their key objectives: high footfall.

The eight minute projection, which was shown 107 times over 11 days, even caught the attention of the media. BBC News covered the event during its launch, showcasing the vibrancy of the city and adding regional exposure.

We were thrilled to bring the power of projection mapping to such a special festive project. Mission accomplished!
