Mechanical Dragon Cake for Cake International
“Very few people have seen something like this and Stu went above and beyond what we had imagined. I found that the possibilities are endless and he was just brilliant.”
What the client wanted
They wanted a cake they could show at Cake International, a cake that was different from any other cake ever displayed at the show. They already knew that they wanted to make a mechanical dragon out of cake – a 7ft tall and 2 ½ m long steam punk dragon – and after seeing Angie Scott’s projection mapped cake online, they knew they wanted to incorporate projection mapping.
The initial brief was to create an interactive, projection mapped background. We did that, creating a background with a revolving moon, going from night to day, and picturing lots of animals. After discussions with the cake artists, we also realised we could add even more features, including projecting flames onto the dragon. Angie Scott was one of the cake artists involved in making the cake and we put blinking eyes on the dog character she created.
People couldn’t believe that it was a cake as it looked almost real. People couldn’t tell that there was a video projector there. It really had a lot of impact. There was so much for people to see and very few people had seen something like this. We created a soundtrack as well for extra impact.
What the client says
“It was amazing – I and everyone else absolutely loved what Stu did. Very few people have seen something like this and Stu went above and beyond what we had imagined. He took on everything that we asked him to do. Working with Stu, I found that the possibilities are endless and he was just brilliant.”
